Back at home, sleep doesn’t come easy. The next day, she shuffles through work carrying around 800-plus pounds of guilt. She sees the other orderlies judge her with their eyes, but she doesn’t have the energy to confront them. And why even try? She knows they can see the bags under her eyes, the lines in her smile and of course, the day-old bruises on her face. She passes through them and walks the halls, staying close to the windows where the sun feels warm on her skin. At one point, she even builds up the courage to stop for a second near Bailey’s closet and wait. But he’s not there. There’s no sign of him at all and not one thing out of place to prove he was even here last night. She closes here eyes and prays. Maybe it was all a dream...

A few hours pass and Bailey doesn’t show up for work. He typically never takes a day off, but this time he lets the clock slide, especially since Dan is away on business.

Lois continues through her daily routine on autopilot, robotically checking on her assigned patients, helping them through the day’s horrors and delivering the drugs to deal with them before when she leaves. Even the venomous regret roiling in her stomach is somewhat quelled when she checks in on Janis and finds her sleeping peacefully without any sign of the nightmare she endured the night before.

Lois lets out a deep breath and leaves for the day, sleepwalking through the rest of the evening and not letting another thought enter her head until morning.

And she almost makes it...

“RIOT! RIOT!”

The words are blasting from the earpiece of her home phone. It’s two hours before her shift starts, but they need her now.

“RIGHT NOW!”

The shrill, barely post-pubescent voice belongs to Dan’s newest intern, Doctor Lemard. His daddy bought him a fancy degree and paid the hospital to take him on. Judging by his frantic, high-pitched, tone, he’s not ready for this at all.

“Mrs. Roose, now! Come in right now. We need everyone here, now!”

“Slow down. What’s going on?”

He doesn’t answer and hangs up.

Lois pulls in a deep yawn and tries to align her next thought. She assumes the place will be burned to the ground in minutes without anyone there to help him. He’s just a kid. She quickly gets dressed and downs a cold cup of last night’s coffee. The kids are still asleep and will be for at least a few more hours until the babysitter arrives.

It’s fifteen minutes later when she parks her car at the hospital. Nothing’s on fire. It’s still the middle of the night and lightly raining. In the silence of the courtyard, she can already hear a few crazies running free on the inside, but that’s nothing too far outside of normal. She steps through the front doors and is immediately met by one of the other nurses.

“Oh god, he called you, too?”

“Yeah.
